Thirty-one Years of Advocacy for Safe, Quality Care Practices

We at Untie the Elderly firmly believe: The single most important factor that
can improve the quality of care delivered in America's health care facilities
is the elimination of physical and chemical restraints. Dignity, independence,
and a sense of control become more precious to the older adult as emerging
limitations and personal losses become a common way of life. Living in an
ageist society, older people are often devalued and subject to dehumanizing
treatment, especially in the area of health care. The use of physical and
chemical restraints is the epitome of such treatment. We believe that frail,
older people can be well cared for in our nation's healthcare facilities
without the use of restraints.
